What's the best timeline for a sunset proposal?

Work backwards from sunset: scout about 45 minutes before golden hour, have the photographer hidden 15 minutes before it, walk out as golden hour begins, ask in its first ten minutes, take portraits, watch the Sun go down together, then use blue hour for photos. The times in the tool above follow that pattern for the city and date you pick, using the NOAA solar equations.

Propose in golden hour, celebrate at sunset.

Golden hour, sunset or blue hour: when to ask

    Golden hour

Warm, low, soft light on faces. Time to ask, react and take photos before it fades. Our pick.

    The moment of sunset

Beautiful sky, but faces turn to silhouettes against it and the clock runs out fast.

    Blue hour

Calm, cool light after sunset. Lovely with city lights, but dim for candid faces. Better for the after-photos. The National Weather Service defines the civil twilight it falls in.

Who this timeline is not for

If your spot sits under a ridge, beside tall buildings or inside a forest, the Sun will vanish before the calculated sunset, sometimes by a lot. Asterfold assumes a flat horizon too. In that case, scout at the real time a week before and trust what you see. If you need terrain-aware 3D planning for a mountain shoot, a specialised photography planner such as PhotoPills is the better tool.

How to plan it in Asterfold in three steps

    1. Save the spot and aim. Stand where you'll ask, save the viewpoint, and turn toward your shot on a first-person horizon. Asterfold shows the dates this year when the Sun sets inside your frame.
    2. Plan the session. Choose the light window (golden hour, sunset or blue hour), add notes, gear, a reminder and a short checklist, then open the spot in Maps when it's time.
    3. Check Tonight. Sunset ratings with plain-English reasons, hour-by-hour low, mid and high cloud from MET Norway, and forecasts 60 km and 180 km toward the setting Sun.

Free includes the Studio, aiming and plans for 2 viewpoints, tonight's ratings and the next 3 evenings. Asterfold Plus adds unlimited viewpoints, smart sky alerts and the full 10-day outlook (Yearly with a 7-day free trial for eligible new subscribers, Monthly, or Lifetime). One design decision we made: ratings are labelled as a rule-of-thumb estimate, never a probability, because a proposal is the worst place to over-promise a sky.

    Sunset proposal questions

What time should I propose at sunset?

Propose early in golden hour, roughly 30 to 40 minutes before sunset in mid-latitude winter, not at the moment of sunset. The light is warm and flattering, faces aren't backlit into silhouettes, and you still have time for photos before it fades.

    How long is golden hour?

It depends on the season and your latitude. In this page's calculator it runs from when the Sun is 6 degrees above the horizon down to sunset, which is often 30 to 50 minutes in the continental US. Near the equator it's shorter; far north it's longer.

Should the photographer arrive before us?

Yes, by 15 to 30 minutes, so they're settled, out of sight and already know where the light falls. Share the exact spot and your planned walk-in time with them.

What if it's cloudy on the proposal day?

Thin high cloud can make sunset more colorful; a thick bank of low cloud toward the setting Sun usually blocks it. Check the cloud forecast a day or two before, and keep the time even if the color doesn't show: golden-hour light under cloud is still soft and good for photos.

Does the Sun set in the same place all year?

No. The sunset point moves along the horizon through the year, so scout your spot close to the real date, or check the direction for that exact date in a planner.

    Is this calculator exact?

It's an estimate. It uses the NOAA solar equations in your browser and assumes a flat horizon at sea level, so hills, buildings or trees can make the Sun disappear earlier than shown.
